Expression & Movement
When we have energy in our system, or the notable tension of suppressing expression or movement, these are sensation cues that movement is desired. Children freely express these impulses, often being silly or upset at their desire. As we get more socialized, we often learn to suppress these movements (to sit still or not hit) and expressions (to not be “weird”). One goal of somatic therapy is to reintegrate the ability to express and move more freely.
Other expression experiments:
Flee response: go on a run
Identity expression: create a work of art, possibly a poem or a painting, that symbolizes this part of self
